2000 SEMINAR IN GETTYSBURG
This year's Longstreet Society
seminar, held in Gettysburg Pennsylvania, was fun and successful with
all buses filled to capacity. Some seminar guests met on Friday to do
restoration work on the ground surrounding the 26th NC monument on the
battlefield. Saturday we were all treated to (sometimes challenging)
battlefield tours of the Peach Orchard and Wheat Field, Pickett's Charge
and Devil's Den led by Dr. Wm Piston, Dr. Carol Reardon and Wayne Motts.
The guides and guests worked hard and we learned things best learned on
the battlefield.
Saturday evening featured the
first annual Longstreet Society Helen Dortch Longstreet Awards ceremony
(see Newsletter Highlights for more), a silent auction and a wine and
cheese social. The highlight of the evening, however, was the Round
Table discussion hosted by the LMF's Wm. Johnson. Everyone appreciated
the question and answer format and asked that this segment be repeated
next year. Sunday morning we were treated to W. Keith Alexander's
dynamic presentation on the retreat from Gettysburg. No one stirred in
their seats as he described Lee's difficult journey out of PA. Special
seminar T-shirts sold well, silent auction bidding was lively, books
were purchased and generous donations were made. Before the weekend was
over, $8,500.00 was raised for the restoration of the General's Piedmont
Hotel--later to become a Longstreet Interpretive Center and LS
headquarters.
