Longstreet's Staff
In order to understand and appreciate James Longstreet's Confederate army career it is neccessary to know his staff. These men, who Longstreet began recruiting on his way to Richmond in 1861 define his leadership and performance. They have been hailed by some as the best staff of either army during the Civil War. Unlike many other staffs, Longstreet's was not composed of relatives, journalists or ministers. He selected his staff based on their potential and performance, and they never failed him. Longstreet trained them to understand battle and anticipate his desires, and he issued orders stating their demands be met as though they were a direct order from him. Under their guidance and efforts the First Corps became world renown. Longstreet fully appreciated them, constantly naming them in his official reports and recommending them for promotion. Click on the soldier's name to learn more about him. If no link is available, that man's page is awaiting construction. They are each worthy of a return visit.
