June 25, 1861 - Accepts commission as Brigadier General, Provisional Confederate States Army to date from June 17th.

July 2, - October 7, 1861 Commanding brigade, Army of the Potomac (CSA) at Blackburn’s Ford and 1st Manassas.

October 7 - Promoted Major general, CSA

October 14-22 - Commanding division, Army of the Potomac (CSA)

1862 - Commanding division (in Potomac District until March 1862)

October 22, 1861 - July 1862 Commanding Department of Northern Virginia, conspicuous performance in battles of Peninsula Campaign; action at Yorktown, Williamsburg, Seven Pines, Seven Days

July 1862 - February 25, 1863- Commanding lst Corps, Army of Northern Virginia (formerly Army of the Potomac) conspicuous performance in battles of 2nd Manassas, South Mountain, Antietam, and Fredericksburg

October 9, 1862 - Promoted Lieutenant general, CSA. Lee backdated his promotion a day to make him second-in-command of the Army of Northern Virginia and senior lieutenant general in the Confederate army. Receives command of over half of Lee's army.

February 25-May 1863 - Commanding Department of Virginia and North Carolina
Suffolk Campaign-Southeast Virginia-North Carolina.

May - September 9, 1863 - Gettysburg Campaign.

September 19-November 5, 1863 - Commanding his corps, Army of Tennessee
November 5, 1863-April 12, 1864- Commanding Department of East Tennessee
Battles of Chickamauga-Chattanooga-Knoxville

April 12 - May 6, 1864- Battle of the Wilderness where he is wounded in action by the friendly fire of the 12th and 41st Virginia Regiments of Mahone’s Brigade. Convalesces at the home of his family in Lynchburg, Va. Then is moved to Augusta, Georgia, when General Hunter’s troops threaten his capture.

October 19, 1864 –April 9, 1865- Returns to the Richmond defenses
Petersburg, Appomattox and the surrender.
