The Piedmont Hotel

Piedmont Restoration.JPG (518218 bytes)After the war, Longstreet owned and operated the Piedmont Hotel Piedmont.JPG (139189 bytes) located near the railroad depot in Gainesville.  It was his political base during his long career as a Republican.  Guests included Generals Joseph Johnston and Daniel Sickles; the voice of the New South, Henry Grady; and Joel Chandler Harris, author of Uncle Remus.  Mr. & Mrs. Woodrow Wilson were frequent guests; their daughter was born at the hotel.  Most of the hotel was demolished in 1918 but the north wing's lower level still exists in excellent condition, including the Wilson room.  The Longstreet Society purchased the property in 1994 and has set as it's primary goal the restoration of the remaining portion of the hotel.  When completed the North wing will become a multi-use facility to include the Longstreet Society Headquarters, a Longstreet museum or interpretive room, and a community meeting room. It will stand as a very busy, active memorial to the General.

The Gravesite

Longstreet's grave is located on high ground in Gainesville's Alta Vista cemetery.  Carved into the granite monument is the American flag overlaying the Confederate battle flag.  Several members of the General's family, including his first wife, are buried here.  The LS erected a large flagpole and flies the American flag at the grave as a memorial to the General and as a beacon to visitors.G-Daughter and G-G-Gson.JPG (536101 bytes)Flag at Marker.JPG (370988 bytes)

Seminars/Education Programs

In 1998 the LS inaugurated their first annual seminar in Chickamunga, GA.   To be held in locations significant to General Longstreet's life, each seminar will feature lectures and tours presented by respected historians.  These events are educational and fun and a welcome way for Longstreet admirers to meet.  Seminar locations so far include Fredericksburg VA, Gettysburg, PA, Sharpsburg, MD and Manassas, VA. Our 2007 seminar will take place in Gainesville, GA, details coming soon!  The LS also offers tours of Longstreet sites in Gainesville to interested individuals and groups.
